1 | 08.09.2019 | ElPolloLoco | 7.0 | A semi-legendary figure in pro-wrestling, sadly little known outside of his native Mexico. If you want to know who first had highly elaborate entrances and introduced supernatural themes in wrestling, look no further than Espectro. Clad in his distinctive green bodysuit and mask, Espectro became infamous for increasingly elaborate entrances, which often involved being him carried to the ring in a coffin and rising from it in a puff of smoke. These entrance were later banned by the DF Boxing Commission (which also regulates pro-wrestling in Mexico City), apparently because they feared they were drawing attention away from in-ring performances... where have I heard this before? He suffered a serious injury in 1959 which led to his early retirement but he came back in 1963 or so, unmasked, as Tony Hernandez but sadly this second career fizzled away. Espectro is extremely hard to rate because so little material about his heydays has survived but on the show business side of pro-wrestling he was clearly years ahead of his time. A true pioneer and visionary. |
