1 | 19.12.2024 | BlackVikingGZ | 5.0 | I'm going to vouch for The Christopher Street Connection. Were they the best tag team in early ROH? No. They had a gimmick that will work in wrestling today? Neither. But at least on ROH (the only work I've seen of them) they were a very entertaining tag team and grew to become a fan favorite in the two first years of the promotion. It's obvious that that first approach, with Da Hit Squad gay bashing them on the first segment of The Era of Honor Begins was really problematic and probably shouldn't have happened. But after that they grew a lot as talents and their in-ring pressence got better. From being a heel team just from being gay (which was a horrible idea), to became an interesting tag team which the crowd accept them and even embrace, having a fun time with their flanboyant entrances with the YMCA and even kissing them. I was so glad to see the fans got to enjoy them and cheer them, specially after that horrible first segment. From an in-ring perspective, they weren't the greatest team, and I don't recall any particulary good match, except maybe some bout with the Carnage Crew, but that wasn't the point. They were portraited as some colorful characters and as enhancement talent for other wrestlers. |

One of the true dark marks of early ROH. I don't know enough about their history to know for sure what these two guys did otherwise, but on ROH tapings that I've seen, they were a deeply homophobic gimmick used for cheap heat, reminiscent of the West Hollywood Blondes/Rainbow Express, or Chuck and Billy. I know the idea was to throw out a super "sports entertainment" gimmick-y team for the wrestling purist crowd to hate violently, but did it also have to come with gaybashing and homophobic stereotypes? Neither of them were particularly good outside of that, being some of the weaker workers of the era and bad promos on top of it who leaned heavily into their over the top and mean-spirited gimmick. There's just nothing to like here. I feel bad if either of them are actually gay and were just doing this to get a job, but man, have a little self respect even in that case. |
